Experience – Steel Industry

  • Completed a complex power quality study for the largest steel mill in North America that was placed in service in late 2010 and has several medium voltage large adjustable speed drives for cold and hot strip mills. The work covered electrical equipment failure, snubbers’ failure, harmonic study and power quality measurements.
  • Investigated integration issues of 400 MW steel plant with a captive power plant located in the Far East.  This application is the first of its kind and many power quality issues had to be addressed including the operation of 160 MW arc furnace with captive power plant. Active power compensation scheme was developed using 200 MW resistor bank and SCRs control to compensate for large and sudden furnace load swings such that the power plant will always see stable active power load.
